The story is adapted from real events. It tells the story of a transgender man named JT LeRoy who became popular as a writer in 1999. It was later revealed that his image was fabricated: the so-called book he wrote was actually a book by a man named Laura. Albert (played by Dunn) was written by a woman, and his public image is played by a woman named Savannah Knoop (played by Stewart).
